However, our inventory of approximately 20,000 tons and state-of-the-art technical equipment and software are more typical of large company. Founded as a small business, we have established ourselves as a medium-sized company in the steel trade through continuous progress and steady growth.
Founding
In 1932, the two brothers Hermann and Walter Stahlschmidt founded Hermann Stahlschmidt Stahlges. m.b.h. – HERSTA for short – in Düsseldorf.
Steady growth
Headquatered in Düsseldorf harbour, the company grew steadily in the first decades after its founding. In addition to all types of steel, the company initially also sold tools and mass-produced parts.
Relocation to Willich
In order to create more space for the growing company, an office building and a 4,000 m² warehouse were built in nearby Willich. The move took place in 1980.
Construction of additional warehouses
The ever-expanding product range required two additional warehouses, each measuring 4,000 m², which were built in the 1990s. In 1997 a hall for mechanical processing was built.
Construction of Halls 5 and 6
In 2004, a new 3,500 m² building was constructed and then was expanded in 2007 to include a 3,000 m² hall.
Construction of high-bay warehouse
A high-bay warehouse was built to improve logistics workflows comprising 1,592 cassettes, each capable of holding 5,000 kg of material.
Upgrade to Business Central
The Microsoft Dynamics NAV software in use at the company was successfully migrated to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central on January 1.
